Introducing Hiba Cattle

The former Hiba County (now Shobara City) is located in the northeastern part of the prefecture. It has long been working to improve the quality of Wagyu cattle, partly due to the fact that Tatara iron manufacturing was popular there. In Hiwa Town in the Chugoku mountainous region, the “Iwakura-tsuru” cattle, one of the oldest in Japan, was created by Rokuemon Iwakura during the Tenpo era (about 170 years ago), and the Arizane-tsuru cattle in Taishaku Village (present Tojo Town) also gained widespread renown in the early Meiji era. In the Showa era, tracing the paternal lineage of both cattle revealed that they were concentrated in the “No. 10 Nodaya,” and the female lineage of their offspring, which had the bloodlines of “Iwakura-tsuru” and “Arizane-tsuru,” and shared the same characteristics, was recognized as “Azuma-tsuru.”

*“Tsuru” refers to a herd of cattle with a strong bloodline that was raised exclusively in a specific region.

Later, as times changed and cattle shifted from service cattle to beef cattle, the Hiba lineage was crossed with the Tajima lineage to create the new Hiba cattle, such as the “Otosha 6” and “9 Nakamaru,” which combine the beauty of growth, volume, and qualities. The Hiba cow won first place in a row at the National Wagyu Competition, also known as the Olympics of Wagyu, at the 4th national championships in 1982 (Showa 57) and the 5th national championships in 1987 (Showa 62). In the following year, 1988 (Showa 63), it was awarded the Emperor's Cup, the highest honor in the livestock industry, at the Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries Festival. It gained a reputation both in name and reputation of “Hiroshima, the best cattle producing region” in Japan.


「比婆牛」生産への取組

庄原市では、「比婆牛」の認証開始に伴い、平成26年7月7日に和牛飼養農家や関係機関で組織する「あづま蔓振興会」が設立し、ブランド牛「比婆牛」の振興に向け、系統雌牛群の造成、比婆牛素牛の生産推進などの取り組みを行っています。


岩倉紋について

岩倉紋

この紋は、最古の蔓牛である岩倉蔓をつくりあげた岩倉六右衛門を先祖に持つ、庄原市比和町の岩倉家の蔵紋で、岩倉牛をイメージしたものです。歴史、伝統を色濃く受け継ぐ「比婆牛」の象徴として使用しています。




比婆牛 認証定義(平成30年6月1日現在)

以下の基準を満たす和牛肉を、庄原市が「比婆牛」と認証します。

  • その牛の父、母の父、母の母の父のいずれかが広島県種雄牛であること。
  • 庄原市内で生まれ、広島県内で最終最長期間肥育されたこと。
  • 肉質等級が3等級以上であること。
  • 市が指定した県内のと畜場でと畜された黒毛和種の去勢牛または未経産牛であること。
  • 庄原市長が発行した「比婆牛素牛認定書」を有していること。
